ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist, my goal is to create art filled with life and emotion. Something that would be considered beautiful, yet gruesome. My main medium is oil on canvas, usually on a scale of around 36 X 40 inches. I typically paint animals on a barren, black background, either being surrounded by foliage or being consumed by plants from the inside out. I take an interest in expressing a sense of overwhelming fear through my medium, using it as a form of self-expression. I paint my animals to be in a state of shock, overpowered by their situation. The backgrounds are usually mat black, with little white dots and or a light haze to give the subject depth in space, and a somewhat sculptural feel. My work typically uses a baroque style with animals in fictional situations. I enjoy working in this style because it allows me to paint what I want with a dramatic feel, while including complex personal emotions. The violence as well as beauty in my art represents an unwillingness, yet acceptance of reality. The peaceful brutality of my art helps me come to terms with my physical reactions to being overwhelmed with fear and allows me to take a step back to explore my work and what it means to me. I also enjoy making beautiful art, which I can be proud of and share with others. I don't intend for people to understand my art, but if one does connect with it, I hope they too can see the peace and beauty that harmonizes with pain.
